India's SSTL Not Looking to Acquire Another Mobile Network Operator

­India's Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has denied that it is looking at aquiring another mobile network as it seeks to reenter the market following the cancellation of its GSM licenses by the Supreme Court.

The company is financially backed by Russia's Sistema, which also controls MTS, and permitted SSTL to use the MTS brandname in India.

The Russian government has also put pressure on India over the license cancellations which could leave MTS India with 16 million customers, and no radio network.

The company is still waiting for the government and regulator to finalise the details of how it plans to resell the cancelled radio spectrum and licenses.

"From the perspective of SSTL, the immediate priority is to seek clarity on spectrum-related regulations from the government and also look at the outcome of the company's curative petition filed in the Supreme Court," the company said in a statement.

The company has previously suggested that the high minimum fee being suggested for the radio spectrum auction may cause it to withdraw from the market.
