Former France Telecom CEO Investigated in Suicide Probe

Published on:

France Telecom's former CEO, Didier Lombard is being investigated by the authorities over a spate of suicides at the company in 2008 and 2009.

Mr Lombard stepped down from role of CEO in 2010, in part following pressure over the suicides, which were blamed on stresses caused by the company restructuring programme.

It was noted that at the time though that the suicide rate was no higher than the average in France, it was just numerically high because the company had such a large workforce. However, many of the suicide notes blamed the company for their decision.

Although he hasn't been arrested, he was questioned by investigating magistrates for four hours, and has been required to post a US$125,000 bond with the police.

His lawyer told reporters that he is being accused of harassing people he never met. "That is a stunning accusation." the lawyer added.
