Vodacom's CEO to Leave the Company Next March

­South Africa's Vodacom has announced that its CEO, Pieter Uys is to retire from the company next March, after almost 20 years with the company, including four years as Chief Executive.

He is being replaced by Shameel Joosub, who is currently the CEO at Vodafone Spain, and a former director at Vodacom. Vodafone owns 65% of Vodacom.

Pieter Uys joined Vodacom in 1993 and led the development of the company's network before being appointed as Managing Director in 2001. He became the Chief Operating Officer of Vodacom Group in 2004. Pieter Uys was appointed Vodacom Group Chief Executive in 2008.

Vodacom Chairman Peter Moyo said: "On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Pieter for his many achievements in establishing a great business which now serves the needs of 49 million customers across five countries. We are grateful for his vision, leadership and commitment over the past two decades. I am also delighted to welcome Shameel back to Vodacom. As one of the leading architects of Vodacom's success from its earliest beginnings, Shameel will be ideally placed to build on Pieter's substantial legacy."
