Nokia Continues to Hold Top Spot in Indian Mobile Phone Market

Mobile phone sales in India passed the 50 million mark in the first quarter of this year, according to Cybermedia Research, representing a 9.1% increase over last year.
Smartphones represented 5.3% of the sales volumes, but nearly a quarter of total revenues. Dual SIM handsets continued their dominance of the market though, making up just over two-thirds of all phones being sold.
3G capable phones represented around 10% of total sales, which is a third higher than a year ago.
Nokia retained its top spot in the overal market with a market share of 23%, followed by Samsung at 14.1% and the Indian handset brand, Micromax coming third at 5.8% market share.
In the smartphone market though, Samung is the leader with a 40.4% market share, followed by Nokia (25.5%) and RIM with 12.3%
"Currently, large, international players like Nokia and RIM, as well as relatively new entrants like Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and Spice are faced with the challenge to enhance their portfolio of products, models and services, to stay relevant and profitable in the long run," said Naveen Mishra, lead analyst, Telecoms Practice, Cybermedia Research.
