UK Hotel Replaces Gideon Bibles with Amazon Kindles

Published on:

A UK hotel chain has decided to replace its printed copies of the Gideon Bible that is such common sight in Hotels around the world, with an Amazon Kindle preloaded with the Bible.

The trial to switch to digital from printed Bibles also means that their customers can download any other religious text to the value of £5 at no extra charge - finally opening up the reading material range to those whose religion is not of the Christian variety.

Those customers of a secular nature will also be able to download books from the Amazon library - but will have to pay for them.

Adam Munday, general manager at Newcastle's Hotel Indigo told The Telegraph newspaper that the idea was inspired by Newcastle's literary heritage.

"We wanted to reflect this literary history in a very contemporary way, so are offering guests the use of cutting-edge Kindles pre-loaded with The Bible, instead of the more traditional hardcopy Gideon's Bible that they would expect to find in a hotel."

The trial will last two weeks and if successful may be rolled out to the hotel chain's other 44 venues.

Gideons is an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to distributing copies of the Bible, most famously in hotels. The organization was founded in 1899 and began distributing free Bibles in 1908. They handed out nearly 80 million copies last year.
