Facebook and Amazon Named As Possible Buyers of the BlackBerry Platform

Published on:

Research in Motion is reported to be considering a split of its operations and selling off its handset manufacturing side to either Amazon or Facebook.

The struggling company would retain its email processing services.

Citing unnamed sources, the Sunday Times newspaper noted that the company had previously confirmed that it had hired advisors to develop a strategy to turn the company's fortunes around and that such proposals could include a sale or lease of its technology assets.

Facebook has long been rumoured to be working on a mobile phone, and acquiring the BlackBerry manufacturing skills would help overcome reported difficulties the software based company is having in moving to a hardware platform.

Amazon has hardware services, mainly in the form of its Kindle ebook reader, but it is unclear what benefit the company would gain from moving into the smartphone market.

The messaging platform may also be licensed to Google or Apple the newspaper report added.
