Apple Ordered to Pay Compensation to Samsung by Dutch Court

Apple has been ordered to pay damages to Samsung by a Dutch court after it ruled that Apple had infringed on Samsung's patents.
The size of the damages has still to be decided, but marks a rare victory for Samsung in the tit-for-tat patent dispute between the two companies. However, Samsung had claimed that Apple was infringing four of its patents, but the court ruled in its favour on only one of them.
The patent violation applies to iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 and iPad 1 and 2, but seemingly not the new iPad 3.
"Samsung welcomes the court's ruling, which reaffirmed Apple's free-riding of our technological innovation," the company said in a statement, adding that "In accordance with the ruling, we will seek adequate compensation for the damages Apple and its products have caused."
The decision in a Dutch court could have wider implications as both companies have moved European distribution and holding companies into the Netherlands to avoid problems caused by their ongoing patent and design disputes in a German court.
