German Networks Accused of Storing Customer Information for Too Long

A report by a German lobby group, AK Vorrat has claimed that the local mobile networks are storing information about customer calls and data use far in excess of that permitted by the regulators.
The report said that Vodafone stores the location at which a phone is made for 210 days, compared to 80 days for E-Plus and 30 days for T-Mobile. In response, the networks argued that they needed to retain the location data to settle call billion disputes from customers.
The report said that regulations permit the networks to only store information for calculating so-called "home zone" calls which are charged at a lower rate. They also found location data was being stored for free or bundled calls, for which it felt there was less chance of customer disputes occurring.
The lobbyists are calling on the networks to review their procedures, particularly considering the damage that could be caused if data security was breached by an outside party.
