Digicel to Appeal Against Decision to Lower Mobile Termination Rates

Published on:

Digicel Jamaica has filed a appeal against the telecom regulator's decision to lower mobile termination rates in the country. Digicel is arguing that the interim mobile termination rates announced earlier this month is unconstitutional.

Digicel has asked the court to issue an order delaying the changed to the MTRs and is seeking a judicial review of the regulators actions.

Richard Fraser, Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs for Digicel Jamaica, commented; "The OUR's action in terms of setting interim mobile termination rates with no regard for due process and procedural fairness, cannot go unchallenged as the medium and long terms effects of actions like these will be detrimental to the telecoms industry and to the wider Jamaican economy."

The country's only other mobile network, Lime recently cut its call rates in anticipation of the lower MTRs that it would have to pay to Digicel, but in a separate statement confirmed that the lower rates would remain in place during the court action.
