UK Banks to Enable Smartphone Based Cash Withdrawals from ATMs
Published on:
Customers of two UK banks, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) or NatWest are now able to request cash withdrawals from ATMs using their smartphone.
Mobile banking customers can use their smartphone app to request up to £100 via the mobile phone and are given a six-digit code to type into the ATM keypad in order to withdraw the money.
The banks said that the system would offer an alternative should the customer have left their wallet at home, or had their cards stolen.
"It is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it," said Ben Green, head of mobile at RBS and NatWest.
The customer needs the mobile banking app, which the banks said was now installed in around 2.6 million handsets.
In related news, ATM manufacturer, NCR says that it has developed a software upgrade for its existing units that can scan a barcode displayed on a mobile screen in order to withdraw cash. The system still requires the use of an Apple or Android smartphone though.
