Sony Mobile to Focus on Smartphones for Indian Market

Published on:

Sony Mobile has decided to withdraw from selling feature phones in India and will be focusing its energies into the smartphone market in future, the company's local Managing Director has announced.

In an interview to Business Line, Mr P. Balaji, the company's Managing Director noted that smartphones make up 45% of the value of the Indian mobile market, but just 10% of their volume at the moment. This ratio is only expected to increase in the future.

Asked if the company is worried about losing market share, he responded by noting that other companies might address other things, but that he felt the decision was correct for Sony Mobile.

The company will also ramp up its marketing efforts in the country and has hired 1,000 staff to work in retail stores to promote their products.

He also confirmed that while there are no current plans for a handset factory in the country, he wouldn't rule out such a possibility in the future.
