Amazon to Set Up its Own MVNO in Japan

Published on:

Online retailer, Amazon has reportedly signed a deal to set up its own virtual mobile network in Japan, running over the NTT DoCoMo network.

The Amazon MVNO will be offering a prepaid 500MB SIM card for a flat rate of ¥1980 (US$25) and will be compatible with the operator's LTE network.

The launch date for the service hasn't been confirmed yet, but the company won't be selling phones with the service, expecting users to bring their own handsets. It was noted by the Nikkei newspaper that the SIM card will work in handsets designed to "foreign specifications", which was reported to be a hint about support for the Apple iPhone which DoCoMo does not currently offer.

Amazon is also preparing to launch its Kindle e-book reader in the country in the next few months.
