MTS Could Be Back in Turkmenistan in 3-4 Months

Russian-owned cell phone provider MTS could be operating again in Turkmenistan in three or four months, Investcafe.ru reported May 16, quoting Vladimir Yevtushenkov, chairman of Sistema, the holding company that owns a majority share of MTS.

"The resolution has been signed, and all the licenses have been distributed," he said. "We need some time to resume operations and hire retailers. We think we'll re-open in three or four months."

MTS and the Turkmen government reached a deal on MTS's return, Yevtushenkov said on Turkmen TV May 2. MTS operated in Turkmenistan 2005-2010, before Ashgabat refused to renew its five-year contract.
