Apple Offering to Settle Chinese IPad Trademark Dispute

Published on:

Apple has offered to settle its ongoing iPad trademark dispute in China, although the two sides are still negotiating over the price Apple will have to pay Proview Technology for the brandname.

Proview Technology (Shenzhen) registered the trademark in numerous countries in 2000, and Apple later bought the rights to the name from Proview's Taiwan subsidiary in 2009. However, Proview claims that the sale did not include the rights on the Chinese mainland - a claim that Apple disputes.

The two companies are now suing each other in various Chinese courts, while Proview has attempted to seek an order banning the export of iPad branded tablets from China - a move that would cripple sales of the device.

In an interview with the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, Proview's lawyer Xie Xianghui said that "We feel that the attitude of Apple has changed. Although they expressed that they were willing to negotiate, they have never taken any action before. But now, they are having conversations with us, and we have begun to consult on the case,"

Xie said the two sides have discussed a compensation package, and Apple has tabled an undisclosed amount it thinks appropriate. The Proview side has not agreed on the deal yet.
