Telenor Offering HSPA+ Services on Budapest Underground Railway

Telenor Hungary says that it has upgraded the underground mobile network coverage available within the Budapest metro railway to a peak rate of 42Mbps download speeds.

Telenor completed the overground part of its network modernization project at the end of 2011. During this year, the operator plans to fine-tune its services, add more areas to the 3G network and improve indoor coverage.

As part of the latter effort, Telenor made mobile Internet with a theoretical download speed of 42 Mbps available in the Millennium Underground Railway, along the full length of metro lines 2 and 3, in the underground sections of Szentendre Suburban Railway as well as at all of their underground stations on 23 March.

"In metro tunnels, a special solution is required to provide appropriate coverage. We use radiation cables to ensure uniform field strength distribution. Having been granted access to this network infrastructure, Telenor immediately started to develop an underground uplink network of an appropriate bandwidth. Now this network offers the same speed and reliability to customers as our overground network", said Zsolt Sepsi, acting Chief Technology Officer of Telenor.

From mid-March, Telenor customers travelling on the red metro line can watch a 7-minute YouTube video smoothly on their way from Keleti railway station to terminal Örs vezér tere. Telenor installed special equipment at several metro stations to maintain excellent video quality when crossing cell borders. As a result, users never experience any hiccup in downloading or browsing when travelling underground.
