The Romanian mobile operator Telemobil has launched its network built with CDMA2000 1X equipment operating on its 450MHz spectrum. Telemobil will initially introduce service in 30 major cities and towns with full nationwide coverage by 2003. Under the agreement Lucent has provided and installed mobile switching centers and Flexent(tm) CDMA450 Modular Base Stations.
"Our CDMA2000 1X platform will enable mobile operators with 450 MHz and similar analog spectrum to quickly and cost-effectively deliver high-capacity voice and high-speed data services using their current spectrum allocation," said David Poticny, Lucent Technologies vice president for Global Wireless Strategy. "We are pleased to be able to support the successful commercial launch of CDMA2000 1X for 450 spectrum in Romania, a world first."
"We like the concept behind CDMA450. It uses 450 MHz spectrum allocation efficiently, provides high-speed data rates and is a good investment because it is a fully ITU compatible technology," said Diwaker Singh, CEO of Telemobil. "Lucent's expertise in CDMA technology makes them the perfect commercial partner for the launch of our Zapp Mobile(r) service."
