Pakistan to Install Phone Jammers in Jails

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Department of Home and Tribal Affairs has ordered installation of cell phone jammers in all sensitive provincial prisons to thwart communication between detained militants and their networks, media reported March 12.
The Home and Tribal Affairs Department has asked the Prisons Department to let the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority survey the prisons for installation of jammers, The News reported. A ministerial committee in December recommended installing the devices.
Officials have complained that militants and hardened criminals are communicating easily with their networks and undermining law and order, The News reported. Two militant commanders killed three policemen and escaped in August after plotting their escape with the help of cell phones.
