Apple has filed a patent infringement lawsuit as a test case that could impact on sales of Android smartphones in the USA.

The lawsuit was filed by Apple against Samsung in  a federal court in California and is seeking an import ban on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The company alleges that the Android 4.0 operating system (Ice Cream Sandwich) infringes on four of its patents.

In a lawsuit, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from Apple products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

Samsung said in a statement: "We continue to assert our intellectual property rights and defend against Apple's claims to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business,"

Apple and Samsung are involved in over 20 legal fights over patent and design claims in at least 10 countries.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, et a 12-00630.
