MTN Nigeria Call Center Faces Strike Action Over Pay Dispute
Published on:
Around 2,000 call centre staff working for an outsourced partner for MTN Nigeria have threatened to stop work in a dispute over wages paid to them by the company operating the facility.
MTN awarded the call centre contract to CNSS Contact Centre Limited in early 2010 and the building opened in June 2010 with MTN training the staff to handle its customer queries.
However, local newspaper, The Nation reports that there is a simmering dispute over "organised exploitation" by the company, especially due to the wage difference between staff at the outsourced call centre vs staff employed by MTN at other offices.
The staff also claim that they were offered N120,000 (US$743) a month, but were only paid N35,000 per month.
However, Funmilayo Omogbenigun, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Corporate Services Division of the MTN, told the newspaper that "we ensure that staff provided by our outsourced partners are remunerated in line with the current levels for their particular job profile and geographical area, and that they work in a conducive, nurturing environment."
