Thailand's AIS Expects LTE Trials Within Weeks

Published on:

Thailand's AIS expects to be able to start preliminary trials of an LTE network in cooperation with the two state-owned telcos, TOT and Cat Telecom by the end of this month.

AIS will start trials with TOT using its 2.3Ghz spectrum, while also trialing LTE at 1800Mhz with Cat Telecom.

AIS and TOT will jointly set up 84 cell sites in Bangkok and some major provinces to conduct the testing, Wichian Mektrakarn, AIS's chief executive told the Bangkok Post.

The regulator has granted the companies a renwable 90 day license for the tests.

Rival network, True Corp has also asked permission from the NBTC to test LTE services on the 1800-MHz frequency.

Formal auctions of the spectrum for LTE services are not expected until 2013-14 at the earliest.
