A Paraguayan Catholic Bishop has denounced mobile phones as tools of sin and said that the devices are accursed in a speech given at Caacupe.
He told the Associated Press in a (landline) telephone interview that mobile phones ease access to pornography and aid in "inappropriate relations.''
He added that around 40 percent of Christian families suffer damage "because of the bad use of cellular phones and the Internet.''
Religious organisations have a confused history with modern devices. In 2009, the Italian church urged members to go on a technology fast during Lent. However, earlier this year, the USA Catholic Church launched an iPhone app that offers absolution for sins over the wireless network.
Last year, a church in Canada and another in the UK both held church services where parishioners where able to bring in their electronic gadgets for a blessing from the vicar.
