Florida Woman Gets $201,000 Phone Bill After Fortnight in Canada
Published on:
A Florida, USA woman was presented with a phone bill for US$201,000 by T-Mobile after her two deaf-mute brothers used their phones while roaming in Canada, although she did not have a roaming tariff on their shared account.
Initially thinking the bill was a mistake, it turned out that the costs were legitimate for the tariff she was on and the costs have been built up over the two-week holiday in Canada.
After contacting a local television station, she was able to reduce the bill to US$2,500 and was given six months to pay the debt.
She told local media that the company should have warned her as soon as the phone bill started to rocket up beyond normal usage of US$175 per month. The industry has recently agreed to implement "bill shock" policies, although the deployment does not need to be offered until 2013.
