The Burundi government has ordered the local mobile networks to start collecting proof of ID from its PrePay subscribers and registering their details.

All new subscribers will be required to provide ID when buying a SIM card, and existing users will need to register their details by an unspecified deadline, after which their accounts will be blocked.

Catherine Mabobori, spokeswoman for the first vice presidency told Bloomberg News that the move was "so security forces can track alleged criminals whose use phones to disturb people,"

According to the Mobile World analysts, the country had just under 1.6 million subscribers at the end of March 2011. Typically a country loses about 10% of its active subscriber base when registration is introduced, mainly due to people not registering expiring SIM cards that they planned to discard anyway.
