Cows Disrupt Vodafone Coverage in Rural UK County

Published on:

Cells on Wheels -- nicknamed COWS -- the mobile base stations that can be driven to areas where capacity is expected to be needed for a short term are a common way to improve mobile phone services.

Their bovine equivalent though can do the exact opposite.

Mobile phone users in the UK's West Cumbria have been left without signal for weeks - because of a field of peckish cows.

The cows reportedly broke through a fence in a field and chewed on the cables, disabling the Vodafone base station covering the rural area.

It then took Vodafone several weeks to investigate the problem, and when they identified it, had to then contact the landline operator, BT to fix the cable.

A BT spokeswoman added that the link was repaired by 5am today. She said: "It is our equipment but not our site, therefore we had to wait for the repairs to the fence to be completed and for the area to be made safe."

Hungry cows can be dangerous.
