HTC Mulls Buying its Own Smartphone OS

Published on:

Taiwan's HTC would consider buying a smartphone OS if it deemed there was a need to avoid the Android/Windows duopoly that is emerging in the smartphone market.

However, HTC Chairwoman, Cher Wang warned that the company would not rush into such a decision, potentially ruling out a swift acquisition of HP's webOS platform.

"We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said in an interview with the Economic Observer of China.

Wang said HTC's advantages lie in its distinctiveness, which means it can make unique products on different operating systems.

"We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform," Wang said. "Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS."
