Swazi Government Sacks Entire Board at State-Owned Telco
Published on:
The government of Swaziland has sacked the entire Board of Directors at the state-owned telco/regulator, the Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC). Although no reason was given by the Minister of Information Communications and Technology, Nelisiwe Shongwe, the decision comes a week after the Prime Minister accused the company of being run by a criminal cartel.
The company is currently leaderless until a new Board is named, which is expected shortly.
The company had just recalled two members who had sat on the board at MTN Swaziland, but been accused, by SPTC not not using their positions to benefit it. SPTC owns a 41 percent stake in Swazi MTN.
As SPTC is also acting as the country's regulator it has been in lengthy disputes with MTN over issues such as the awarding of 3G licenses and whether SPTC can launch its own mobile network in competition with MTN.
There have also been concerns about the procedures followed by the company when it signed a 20-year lease with the submarine cable network, Seacom.
