Facebook Launches Mobile Messenger App

Published on:

Facebook is looking to take a chunk out of the mobile networks lucrative SMS text messaging services with the launch of a new mobile application that seeks to send messages to its own website in addition to the SMS delivery.

The company said that its app will deliver messages through both routes, so that the sender doesn't have to decide if the recipient is likely to read their Facebook page or phone message first.

The Messenger app is an extension of Facebook messages, so all the senders conversations are in one place, including texts, chats, emails and messages.

Whether the recipient will appreciate getting the same message in multiple locations though remains to be seen.

Messenger will be available for both iPhone and Android starting today.
