3G Phone Calls Made in Malaysia

Siemens has demonstrated a live UMTS network in Malaysia with both voice and data calls during the "Asean Communications Multimedia 2001" regions' premier telecommunications event held in Kuala Lumpur.
Transmissions were carried out on a stand alone end-to-end network, which includes a UMTS Mobile Switching Center and several UMTS base stations (Node Bs) as well as 3G terminals. Siemens demonstrated mobile applications such as the interactive city guide "City on Air" and Web Surfing via the Siemens Mobile Portal. This live trial demonstration is the first of its kind in Malysia and was graced by the Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, Yang Berhormat Dato' Amar Leo Moggie, who also participated in the demonstration. 3G licensing guidelines for Malaysia are expected by Q1 2002."
