Apple iPhone Survives Fall from 13,500 Feet

An Apple iPhone that fell from the pocket of a skydiver at 13,500 feet managed to survive the fall and receive a phone call after it impacted into the ground below. Although the screen was shattered, the electronics inside managed to survive the fall.

Jarrod McKinney told CNN that he saw the phone fall from his pocket shortly after jumping out of the plane, but was able to locate it using the GPS locator. For a laugh, Joe Johnson, a skydiving instructor decided to call the phone, and to their surprise it rang.

McKinney, first submitted this story on CNN iReport and said he's not sure when the phone slipped out of his pocket during his fall from the plane, but he first noticed it was missing when he landed on the ground and wanted to take a photo with it.

"I was actually really bumming because I've lost a phone in the past and I usually just have a ton of photos and videos of my kids on the phone," he said. "I just knew it was gone. Falling from that height? (What are) the chances of you finding something like that or even knowing where to look?"

The surprise that the phone worked when it was eventually found was a bigger shock for the phone's owner, as the screen had been cracked when his son knocked the phone off a bathroom shelf so he had considered the phone to be particularly fragile.
