HTC Buys Graphics Company to Boost Patent Portfolio

Published on:

Taiwan based smartphone manufacturer, HTC has bolstered its patent portfolio after paying US$300 million in cash for S3 Graphics. The company is a provider of graphics visualization technologies, and licenses the texture compression algorithms, known as S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) to other companies.

The acquisition extends its IP portfolio with the addition of 235 patents and the pending applications, including those related to graphics visualization technologies.

S3 Graphics recently won a patent dispute with Apple, and the acquisition is being seen as a move by HTC to boost its defenses in its own patent disputes with Apple.

The purchase has been controversial though as Cher Wang, Chairman of HTC, is an indirect significant shareholder in WTI Investment International, which was a part shareholder in S3 Graphics.
