Slovenian mobile network, Si.mobil says that it is planning to deploy 3G services over its 900Mhz radio spectrum. Following the change, mobile broadband internet will be available to more than 85% of the population.
Si.mobil said that in about four months time, it will reconstruct nearly half of its GSM network and upgrade it with UMTS 900 technology, which allows transfer speeds of up to 21Mbps.
By the end of October Si.mobil's UMTS network will cover the upper Gorenjska region and the whole of eastern Slovenia the Štajerska, Koroška, Posavje, Dolenjska, and Kočevsko. During the overhaul, interruptions of up to 20-minute can be expected at every base station under upgrade; however because of the possibility of coverage from the nearest base stations the larger interruptions of services are not expected.
Besides implementation of UMTS 900 technology Si.mobil will upgrade also a part of its existing UMTS network with HSPA+ technology.
