New Light GSM Cell Phone for Chinese Market

Agere Systems (formerly The Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies) has announced that the China-based PTIC Capitel is using its semiconductor and software system-level platform in the company's new C6088 and C6288 GSM handsets, which Capitel started selling a few weeks ago to the Chinese market. The handset are approximately 30% smaller than a business card and weigh only 66 grams each - nearly 70% lighter than the mean weight of wireless handsets. Capitel is the manufacturer and brand name of the cell phones. Mobicom Corporation, based in New Jersey, designs the phones and markets them under the Mobicom brand outside of China. The cell phones are additionally scheduled to be equipped with Class 8 GPRS technology in the first quarter of next year.

"Mobicom has developed the smallest GSM cellular phones, which are based on Agere's chip set platform," said Madam Yang, chairperson of Capitel and Mobicom Corporation. "Two models have been certified with full type approval and launched commercially under the Capitel brand in China. These stylish cellular phones are well received by consumers and distributors and are in high demand in both Chinese and international markets. Thanks to Agere for its evolving chip set and software reference design platform and Mobicom's customized design in its proficient engineering effort. Capitel is pleased with such beautiful cellular phone solutions to serve our customers."
