Apple's iPhone 5 May Opt for Totally Redesigned Back Plate

Published on:

Further fevered speculation about Apple's forthcoming iPhone 5, that it might be released sooner than expected, although later than some had originally hoped - and that it might come with a totally redesigned backplate.

Although some developers have apparently been given access to a new device, with the upgraded OS, under the usual Apple threats of dire events if they leak anything about it - the Boy Genius Report website says that the final version will be both upgraded OS and an totally new design for the handset chassis.

A separate rumour of a curved or beveled backplate might fit in with earlier reports of a curved screen for the iPhone that were apparently causing some difficulties with Taiwanese manufacturers.

The use of a beveled or teardrop design also enables the manufacturer to claim to have the "thinnest phone" around by only measuring the thinnest section, as opposed to the average depth of the handset - something that caused a bit of a tussle between Samsung and Sony Ericsson earlier this year.
