Government Body Rejects CAT Telecom Spending Plans
Published on:
Thailand's state-owned telco, CAT Telecom has confirmed that its 3G network will be launched as planned in the third-quarter of this year, despite the rejection of its 15-year capital-expenditure plan by the National Economic and Social Development Board.
The government's NESDB had rejected the company's proposal to invest Bt12 billion (US$395 million) on a nationwide 3G network.
The original plan had called for the deployment of 15,000 base stations and a new backhaul network.
The mobile network says that its network infrastructure is currently sufficient to provide 3G services, and as demand rises it expects to be able to lease capacity from other networks to expand its coverage.
The company has also been facing delays in importing 3G network infrastructure as the interim regulator has been holding up imports pending a legal decision on whether it has the authority to approve the imports in the first place.
