Optus Starts EDGE Upgrade in Selected Cities

Published on:

Note -- this news article is more than a year old.

Australia's Optus has started deploying an EDGE upgrade to its GSM network in three cities, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Optus told ZDNet that the changeover had occurred at a number of the newer base stations in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne over the past few weeks with no upgrades required. The improvements are being targeted in areas where the 3G network is still weak to act as a fall-back for customers.

Older base stations would need some hardware upgrades, so the EDGE deployment is currently being prioritised to the newer software only upgraded base stations.

Rival networks, Telstra and Vodafone already offer EDGE services.
