Telkom South Africa Wants 900Mhz Spectrum Holders Barred from 800Mhz Auction

Published on:

South Africa's dominant landline network operator, Telkom has called on the telecoms regulator to block the incumbent mobile networks from bidding in the forthcoming 800Mhz spectrum auction.

Telkom senior regulatory specialist Johan Smit told TechCentral that the regulator, Icasa must "consider the operators that have current assignments of 900MHz before assigning 800MHz".

Telkom also owns a mobile network, but runs on the higher 1800Mhz and 2.1Ghz spectrum bands. Of the other three networks, Cell C and MTN are reusing some of their 900Mhz spectrum for 3G services as it offers wider coverage in rural regions and easier penetration of buildings in urban areas.

Telkom also wants the regulator to firm up its plans for the digital dividend spectrum at least a year before it is made available so that the operators can plan their network deployments.
