Timor Telecom tops 500,000 customers

Portugal Telecom has announced that its East Timorese subsidiary, Timor Telecom has topped 500,000 customers on its mobile network representing about half the country's population.
Zeinal Bava, chief executive, PT, highlighted PT's commitment to East Timor "Today has a special meaning for Portugal Telecom and Timor Telecom (TT). At TT, we have not only reached the 500,000 mark, but also renewed our commitment to this country", said Zeinal Bava, chief executive officer, PT.
The company also confirmed that its network coverage, which currently stands at 86% of the population will reach 92% of the population by the end of the year.
Apart from being the major employer in the country, TT has already invested USD75 million in the country since 2002, equivalent to 15% of the GDP.
