Windows Phone OS Patch Crashes Samsung Phones

Microsoft has stopped sending out a small OS upgrade to Windows Phone 7 users, after it started making some handsets unusable after the upgrade was applied. The problem seems to primarily affect Samsung phones, but the company has stopped the OS upgrades until it can be sure what is causing the problem.

Users have been reporting problems as widespread as regular crashing of the handset software to a complete inability to switch the phone on again.

The OS upgrade is quite a small patch that started going out to handsets this week in order to prepare the handset for a much larger and long expected upgrade due next month.

In a statement, Microsoft said: "We have identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of phones."

"We have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update."

The OS upgrade difficulty comes just a couple of weeks after Nokia said it would switch to the Microsoft platform as its primary OS for future smartphones.
