More reports about the rumoured cancellation of the US launch of Nokia's forthcoming touchscreen X7 smartphone. Although the handset has not been formally announced, it is widely expected to be shown off next month, and was expected to be an exclusive handset in the USA for AT&T.
Nokia pulled the US launch after AT&T reportedly declined to support sales with a sufficiently large marketing campaign. The company has long struggled to gain the sort of market share in the USA as it enjoys in other countries, and the smartphone was seen as part of its fightback against other smartphone vendors. Nokia isn't listed among the top five smartphone makers in the USA.
Nokia still plans to launch the X7 in other markets, a source told the Wall Street Journal.
Nokia's smartphone strategy is expected to be in focus when the company reports its financial results next Thursday. On a conference call with investors in October, Nokia's new CEO, Mr. Elop said there was no reason Nokia can't succeed in North America, but did say it would require a change in strategy.
"I believe there is a degree of focus and execution necessary, along with different patterns of doing business that can drive success in that marketplace," Mr. Elop said.
