British and French mobile networks are close to signing a deal to expand their network coverage into the railway tunnel that runs under the English Channel between the two countries. The local trade magazine, Mobile Today said that the operators are in discussions about a deal to provide coverage in the Eurotunnel by 2012
The move would need an agreement between the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, and its French counterpart, Arcep as the networks are understood to be planning to borrow radio spectrum from each other throughout the tunnel.
Under the expected plans for the tunnel network, passengers would not formally hand-over to the roaming network until they leave the tunnel at the other end.
