Vodacom Aims for 20% Subscriber Growth in Mozambique

Vodacom says that it sees its subscriber base growing by 20 percent
year-on-year in Mozambique, despite the award last week of the country's third mobile operator license.
"We'll probably see good growth of 20 percent plus next year in terms of subscriber figures," Jose dos Santos, head of the company's Mozambique arm, told Reuters on the sidelines of an African telecoms meeting. "We're sitting at just around three million, so we're looking at about another 600,000 to 700,000 new subscribers by the end of 2011."
He said a mobile money service was a key strategic investment for the company, but that it was only likely to be rolled out in the second half of 2011. The company has also planed to spend US$70 million on its network expansion during 2010.
According to figures from the Mobile World analysts, the country ended June 2010 with around 6.77 million subscribers, representing a population penetration level of 32.7%. mCel is the dominant operator, with a market share of 65% - compared to 35% for rival, Vodacom.
Just last week, the country awarded its third mobile network to Movitel, a consortium made up of Vietnamese company Viettel Telecom and Mozambique's SPI following a public tender.
