A new network has gone live in Congo Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo) with the commercial launch of Azur Congo today. Equateur Telecom Congo was awarded the fourth telecom license by the government of Congo Brazzaville on December 11th, 2009 and will operate in Congo under the brand name of Azur.
Azur Congo is a subsidiary of Bintel, which already has GSM operations in Gabon, Central African Republic and Somaliland, as well as majority stake in Swiss based Telesonique.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Stephane Beuvelet, General Manager Azur Congo stated "We have received over-whelming customer response for Azur during the soft launch and trial phase of service, and are pleased to open up full commercial services to all customers in Brazzaville and Point Noire."
Mr. Beuvelet further added "In less than 9 months since being awarded license, Azur will be providing full commercial service to customers in record time, through rapid network deployment and including a full commercial infrastructure. We would like to thank the Government Of Congo Brazzaville, shareholders and our partners for their support in our launch"
Azur Congo is also the first mobile network operator to embrace and implement the new National 9 digit numbering scheme, which will allow customers to retain their existing number with the 01 prefix, on the Azur network. Azur dial plan is +242 01 xxxxxx. During the Book Your Number campaign, customers who reserved and collected their Azur 01 number were also offered Azur branded dual SIM handsets, as a special offer and privilege.
Azur Congo will be launching services in Brazzaville and Point Noire, and will be extending service to other cities shortly.
