Qatar Telecom (Qtel) says that it has successfully upgraded its HSPA network to offer mobile download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, and is set to begin another round of upgrades which should see speeds as high as 21 Mbps available by August 2010.

Qtel is also preparing to begin a trial process for 42 Mbps download speeds later this year.

Khalil Ibrahim Al-Emadi, Executive Director, Networks, Qtel said: "We have a clear road-map in place that will see Qatar emerge as one of the best-connected nations not just in the region, but in the world. The enhancement of our Mobile Broadband network sits alongside our plans for Fibre-to-the-home and network upgrades that will ensure everybody can have the best Internet experience wherever they are in Qatar."

Qtel estimates that more than 50,000 people in Qatar currently use Mobile Broadband solutions.

Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel said: "Qtel's ongoing investment in the speed and quality of our Broadband network is part of our commitment to deliver the fastest and most positive Internet experience for all our customers. We believe that Mobile Broadband can make a real difference in terms of extending the choice of media available to our customers and providing them with flexible, nationwide access to the Internet, which is why we are consistently enhancing and upgrading our service."
