Mexican Network to Enable PrePay Top-Ups from the USA

Mexico's dominant mobile network operator, Telcel is to enable prepay top-ups from the USA via a deal with MoreMagic Solutions. From 46,000 Western Union Agent locations throughout the United States, as well as additional international retail locations, or the web, a customer can purchase a gift of prepaid airtime, or transfer electronic airtime, to a Telcel phone.
MoreMagic Solutions also interconnects with America Movil subsidiaries in Brazil, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Peru, which operate under the Claro brand.
When a member of the Mexican community in the United States, or another country, sends a TopUp, the electronic airtime is immediately available, and the recipient is notified with a personalized SMS message. The gift of an electronic airtime recharge is immediately available on the Telcel mobile phone, and will result in more calls from home.
"Mexican communities in the United States, and around the world, maintain strong ties with friends and family back home, and customers in these communities understand that gifts of airtime for Telcel phones are immediate and inexpensive," said Pankaj Gulati, chairman and CEO, MoreMagic Solutions. "MoreMagic Solutions is pleased to make Telcel recharges available through Western Union Agent locations, additional retail locations and etopuponline.com, so that customers can direct their giving in an immediate and personal way."
Mexico is the leading country of origin for US immigrants, with the Mexican-born population numbering 11.5 million in early 2009, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.
Based on figures from the Mobile World analysts, Telcel ended last September with a shade under 58.4 million customers, representing a market share of 71%.
