SMS and GPRS Will Drive WAP Use in China - Report
SMS has been widely accepted by millions of Chinese wireless users since its 1999 introduction, according to the Yankee Group Business/Technology Editors. Researchers believe adoption of mobile data services in the country will accelerate as SMS services flourish and wireless Internet access via GPRS and 3G networks brings mobile users lower costs, counting for 60% of total data revenues for operators. According to Larry Wan, an analyst at the Yankee Group, "WAP is clumsy on top of 2G networks and existing handsets; but with GPRS, mobile Internet is a different story. As massive GPRS networks are deployed in China within the next three years, mobile Internet services will soon be taking off, accounting for about 40% of total data revenue by 2005.""
