T-Mobile Seeking Partners for its US Network
T-Mobile is seeking a partner for its US network, but is not in any hurry to secure a deal, news reports over the weekend have claimed. The German Handelsblatt newspaper, citing unidentified sources at Deutsche Telekom, said that the company is seeking a partner, which could include rival networks or an outside investor.
The partnership could be either a merger with a smaller network such as MetroPCS or Clearwire, or selling a stake in the US firm to an investor.
Previous reports of a takeover of Sprint Nextel has now been ruled out, the newspaper added. An opportunity to take a stake in Clearwire will have also receded over the past few days as the company has successfully raised the US$2 billion it needed for its own expansion plans.
Deutsche Telekom's chief operating officer, who told Reuters the company remained committed to the U.S. market in October, declined to comment on the report when asked by Reuters in London.
In September, T-Mobile was reported to be in talks with MetroPCS. Although MetroPCS is a CDMA operator, it has committed to a LTE launch next year, which offers an upgrade path for T-Mobile USA.
