Freedom4 Granted Permission to Launch WiMAX Network in the UK

The UK's Daisy Group has announced that its subsidiary, Freedom4 has been granted a licence variation by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom to offer mobile WiMAX services to its customers. Freedom4 is a joint venuture between Daisy Group and Intel Capital.

Freedom4 owns the largest UK WiMAX broadband wireless spectrum licence consisting of two blocks of 84MHz in the frequency band 3.6-4.2GHz.

"These changes to our licence will enable us to provide both fixed and mobile wireless services to our customers using the next generation of mobile technology", said Mike Read, CEO of Freedom4.

Freedom4 applied to vary the technical conditions of its licence under Ofcom's spectrum liberalisation policy, primarily to enable support for mobile terminals and to increase the maximum permitted base station power. Ofcom examined the proposals put forward by Freedom4 and, following a public consultation, Ofcom published their decision to grant the variation in full on 6 October 2009.
