PTP Microwave Market to Prosper As Mobile Backhaul Continues to Drive Market

The use of point-to-point microwave in wireless networks for the backhaul of higher capacity network components is expected to provide additional growth opportunities.

"Despite a cyclical slowdown experienced by some vendors in the first part of 2009, the PTP microwave market will remain strong due to the continuing global build-out of mobile wireless networks, including the continued upgrade in many parts of the world to 3.5G and 4G," said Visant Strategies Senior Analyst Andy Fuertes. "The PTP market continues to show great resistance to the global economic slowdown and wireless backhaul is important in both emerging and established markets since, in many cases, wireline backhaul is not available."

Shipments of PTP microwave radios for wireless backhaul will more than double from 2008 to 2015, accounting for an over $8 billion market for wireless backhaul in 2015 with an overall PTP market of almost $11 billion the same year, according to the report. PTP shipments for enterprise and private networks will also almost double by 2015.

"Software-defined radios and the use of application specific integrated circuits have made PTP microwave radios lower in price and more capable," said Larry Swasey of Visant Strategies. "We are also seeing utilization of higher capacity radios that support TDM and I/P traffic natively and the use of higher frequency radios as operators look for more available spectrum for backhaul use."
