Grameenphone Sells 3,000 BlackBerrys Over 19 Months

Bangladesh's largest mobile network by subscribers, Grameenphone says that it has sold some 3,000 Blackberry handsets since the begining of last year - despite sales being tightly restricted to just 20 outlets.

The BlackBerry service is only available to subscribers through special licenses and is sold at only 20 Grameenphone centres across the country, said a high official of Grameenphone.

The official told the Daily Star newspaper that "as it is an exclusive service for high-end corporate customers, the number of BlackBerry subscribers has grown slowly. But even then, intake has exceeded expectations of the company,"

According to figures from the Mobile World, Grameenphone ended Q1 '09 with around 21 million subscribers.
