ZTE Wins 3G Contract in Belarus

China's ZTE has won a contract to build a 3G network in Belarus for the Byelorussian Telecommunication Network (BeST). The UMTS network will serve mobile service operator life:), the trading name for BeST.

"The UMTS network that we are working with ZTE to construct will enable life:) to continue its rapid expansion in the Belarus mobile market by helping us deliver high quality, high-speed data services to our subscribers," said Mr. Ozcan Ermis, life:) CEO.

BeST is owned 80 percent by Turkcell and 20 percent by the Republic of Belarus. No financial details were provided.

According to figures from the Mobile World analysts, BeST ended Q1 2009 with an estimated 360,000 subscribers, representing a market share of just over 4%. The market is dominated by MTS and Velcom (owned by Telekom Austria).
